Welcome to Suneden Special School
Overview
Suneden Special
School was founded in 1943. It is a private, low-fee paying,
non-denominational school that caters for children with intellectual and
multiple disabilities. The children in the school are aged between 5 and 21
years.
Suneden is
located in Mitchell Park, which is a central-southern suburb of Adelaide,
South Australia.
Suneden prides
itself on providing a caring and educationally stimulating environment for
its 40 – 50 students. With small class sizes and a high staff to
student ratio, educational programmes are tailored to suit the individual
child.
Suneden has
close links with a number of external agencies to assist with our provision
of programmes, including Disability SA, Autism SA, Novita,
Minda Inc., Respite Services and various
workplace providers including Bedford Industries and Orana and
Phoenix. The school offers practicum placements to students
undertaking University degrees including Teaching, Disability Studies,
Psychology, Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy and
Medicine. We also offer placements to students undertaking TAFE
courses and to year 11 & 12 students participating in community studies
or work experience.
All
teaching staff hold the required qualifications to
enable registration with the Teachers Registration Board of SA, together
with additional diplomas, degrees or certificates in aspects of Special
Education. Many of our
Education Support Officers have qualifications in Special Education.
Our
workforce of both male and female staff includes an indigenous art
specialist.
Philosophy
Our
philosophy is based on the principles that our students have the right to:
- Dignity
- Respect
- Inclusion within our society
- An appropriate curriculum which is as
close as practicable to that provided in all schools
- Special programmes that enable the
above to be achieved
